On the Varenkamp site next to the RIVM complex in Bilthoven, new-build has been realized for media preparation, commissioned by SVM. The building includes several cleanrooms, a cold store, a laboratory and office areas. The new-build is located directly adjacent to SVM's G2 building. By following the boundaries of the land use plan, a relatively narrow elongated volume has been created. Together with G2, this forms the entrance to the Varenkamp site behind. The space between the two buildings has an urban character. The other long side of the building borders on a landscape zone.
Access to the building is from the urban side. Here there is an entrance for people, two goods entrances and technical accesses. On this side, the building has an industrial character and is finished in the same aluminium corrugated sheeting as G2 building.
On the landscape side, the façade has been given a 'softer' treatment with different material use. The glass frontage with wood frames contrasts with the industrial aluminium panelling and provides openness and transparency. This results in an intensive visual relationship with the green surroundings. Above the wooden frontages, the façade is layered. It is composed of screened glass panels attached to aluminium uprights. Looking through here, the insulation is visible.
The principal internal arrangement of the building consists of an access route, on which the various programme components are situated. This internal street is conceived as an attractive route, a 'walk in the woods', from where people have visual contact with the landscape.
The cleanrooms stand as detached separate elements on the internal street. Above the cleanrooms is the technology for climate control. Walkways allow access to the technology and the walk-all-over ceilings of the cleanrooms.
The cold store is situated at the end of the internal street with the offices and the laboratory above. The offices are composed of fixed workplaces along the façade and also an open office landscape with flex workplaces.
