JHK Architecten developed a design in partnership with Jan Snel Flexibel Bouwen for the Blauwe Aventurijn Protestant primary school in Utrecht, formerly the J.W. van de Meeneschool. The project, a pilot for Utrecht City Council and the Protestant Education Foundation, was to build a permanent school with a modular construction system. The new school building was realized at the existing location. The entire process from tender procedure up to design, planning permission, construction and the building being taken into use was completed within a year; the new school building was realized in 10 weeks.
The school building, with a surface area of ca 1,500 m², houses the Blauwe Aventurijn primary school and Ludens day care. The bright single-storey volume faces the Ridderlaan and fits in with the urban design arrangement of the Hoograven neighbourhood. The positioning of the volume on the plot generates two equal squares, one for the lower classes and the after-school facility and one for the upper classes. The building has a bright and efficient floor plan with a broad central zone around which the primary school classrooms and the after-school care are located. The heart of the building is formed by the central hall and the games room. There is room for play, development, presentations and performances in this central area. The roof of the heart is higher compared to the rest of the school to ensure good penetration of daylight in this area. The broad corridor zones create a good overview, sight lines between various clusters and a view to the outside.
The exterior façade has been implemented in horizontal blue Raficlad® composite panels in three colour shades. The composite material is durable, weather-resistant and maintenance-free and has an anti-graffiti coating. A healthy indoor climate is achieved by means of a well-insulated building shell, good daylight penetration, low-temperature heating and CO2-driven ventilation. As a result, the requirements for Frisse Scholen (Fresh Schools) class B are met.
