The SpaceBusiness Park Noordwijk is a premium 15-hectare business park in development, situated on the Zwarteweg in Noordwijk. This location, opposite Estec, is intended to house companies oriented towards space travel and other high-grade knowledge-intensive businesses. Commissioned by BAM Utiliteitsbouw BV, The Hague region, building 'De Huygens' was developed as new accommodation for AOES Group BV. AOES (Advanced Operations and Engineering Services) is an international company that is mainly concerned with space and aircraft engineering.
In addition to the urban design principles and the image quality plan, the dimensions of the available plot and the building surface permitted on it were the decisive factors when choosing the lay-out of the volume and the arrangement of the terrain. The compact volume has an omni-directional quality and appearance, underlined by the parking solution located equally around the building.
The robust brickwork block is indented on each level and provided with storey-high glass sections. The incisions give the building form in the interior as well as the exterior. On the inside, zones are created between the closed sections in the end elevations making it possible to make rooms, while behind the transparent sections of the façade, the floors are arranged more openly.
The entrance foyer is situated on the ground floor in the middle of the longitudinal elevation, opposite the core of the building. The central position of this core, where the vertical access is situated, provides the building with maximum flexibility and allows the space on the façade to be subdivided freely. As a result, the best possible use can be made of natural daylight penetration on the deep floors, and the view. The building has three storeys with a total of ca 2,600 m². The detailing of the building supports the concept. The deep jambs in the end elevations and at the position of the windows in the longitudinal elevations are executed in brickwork on all sides. This detail emphasizes the monolithic character of the block even more. With its rough, rural-looking stone in combination with sharp technical detailing, the building has a contemporary but also a pure appearance that connects with the requirements of its user.
