The site of the new accommodation for pharmaceutical company Abbott is part of the Beukenhorst Oost business park in Hoofddorp. Located next to a busy railway line and at the end of two important visual axes, Abbott's head office is situated at an extremely prominent spot. Due to its set-back position on the plot, the visual axes are differentiated and parking is possible all around the building. Built on one of the last undeveloped plots, the new-build stands at one end of the business park and Abbott can present itself as an accessible and easy-to-reach organization.
The starting point for the façade is the omni-directional character of the building. The façade has been executed as load-bearing, which ensures optimal freedom for the lay-out in the office spaces. The openings for natural light have been implemented storey-high, with a succession of windows 600 mm and 1200 mm wide. The staggering of the openings across the floors gives the entire building a dynamic character. The rhythm flows over all the façades and creates a simple basis, in which the detailing and materialization enhance the richness of the block. The carefully elaborated aluminium-clad façade gives the building a contemporary and technical appearance, raised above street level by means of a sturdy plinth with strips of natural stone.
Where function demands it, a gesture has been made, on the ground floor. The robust plinth opens out to become an elongated arcade, where the building welcomes its users and visitors. Spatially, and also in terms of materialization, the frontage of the ground floor is characterized by a transparent and extremely impressive entrance, flanked on the left by a large lunch area, which can be fully combined with the entrance zone, and on the right, by a cluster of meeting rooms and demo space. At the point where the connection is made with the floors above, the ground floor changes into a more functional arrangement of storage functions and the plinth is closed off more emphatically from the direct surroundings. The upper floors have been arranged as efficiently as possible, in order to retain the formulated ease of use and freedom of lay-out in the future.
